Responses

  1. No monopoly

  2. I’m 24yrs old. I strongly disagree with the monopoly the Beer Store has over Ontario. You can go to Quebec or the States and buy a 28 premium brand for less then $20. We pay almost double. Time for things to change!

  3. End the monopoly.

  4. Free our beer!

  5. End the monopoly, now! The time is NOW!

    Mike from Lowville.

  6. Just heard you on the radio ~ keep up the good work.

The Beer store is a joke. Lets end the monopoly.

  7. Stop the monopoly. It’s time for Ontario to let the people have access and pricing of the other areas of Canada when purchasing beer.

  8. Ending the monopoly is long overdue. I heard this on the radio, and fully support it. It’s patronizing to suggest that only these 3 businesses can ensure that underage people don’t get beer. This always has been nothing more than the Province sanctioning market control (price, availability, shelf entry fees etc) for financial gain of the breweries. Now this is foreign control. No-one in Ontario want this to continue, it is just awareness and a willingness to make it an issue for Dalton.

  9. The beer store is a joke !!!
The Bank St Beer Store in Ottawa is the worst.
    Get rid of the monopoly.

    Barry in Ottawa

  10. It is time for this to end. While my beer is chilling in the fridge, I have taken the time to write the Premier a letter in support of the end of the beer monopoly, and I’ll continue sending him an email a day until this practice is stopped.

  11. Does it really matter about foreign ownership? I think not. But for anyone who has lived in Quebec where beer can be readily bought from grocery stores of any size, from convenience stores to major chains, the Ontario Beer Store seems peculiarly archaic. They aren’t attractive, they are too few in urban centres, they aren’t convenient. Time for a change and a more modern approach.

And while we are at it, Quebec grocery stores also carry a modest selection of inexpensive wines. And, why not?

  12. I totaly agree with the Beer Store Monopoly. Something should be done. The word is spreading. I found a blog on http://canadianfreestuff.ca/ pretaining to the petition.
    Keep up the good work

    John in Hamilton

  13. It’s time to get beer in the corner stores of Ontario and end this monopoly.

  14. End The High Prices, The Beer Store Has no Competition!!!! Lets Open the Market for Change!!!!

    Bob in Oshawa

  15. Yes I agree lets end this. I am glad that your word is spreading. I found this site from a blog canadianfreestuff.ca. Keep up the good work. As the above poster mentioned lets send a daily e-mail to the Premier, He stated that He has heard no complaints from the people. Well lets start complaining.

  16. I agree with all, it is time get out of this beer store
business and move to the 21 First century.

It is like in Quebec in the 50′s

  17. Keep up the tough fight Derek. You’re battling against three powerful multi-nationals and even more importantly, a powerful union. Our provincial government does not like to “rock the boat” for fear that those powerful interests may be offended!

  18. I would not have a problem if The Beer Store were owned by the Ontario Government like the LCBO is, but to be owned by 3 foreign companies and to have a monopoly is not acceptable!

    I will sign your petition.

  19. This is a corporate monopoly! Ontario is being bullied into thinking that this is best for it’s people and it isn’t. Are people from Quebec or Alberta just more mature for us that they can have beer in corner stores and we can’t? The MPP’ are just not strong enough to stand up against brewers retail and their own monopoly LCBO to make the correct and fair choice for their people. Free the industry.

  20. Monopolies suck, no matter who owns them.

The Beer Store has got to go!

  21. End this monopoly now. It will be interesting to watch the momentum of this petition once word gets out. Thanks for bringing this forward Derek.

  22. Its time canadians get educated to whats happening in our province,,,FREE OUR BEER then we can go on to other issues….

put beer in corner stores and or franchise the beer store so we can get in on ownerships….

  23. Yes, get with the times, the arguments from the beerstore have no merit,
    1. It’s convenient
Tell that to someone who lives in the stick and has to drive 30 miles to get a six pack of beer. even in the cities they haven’t kept up with the times, in WIndsor theres one few beer stores in town then there was 30 years ago.

    2. They are the only one responsible enough to control it.
Well if a small operator is selling it and they get caught they will be heavily fined and even loose their license to sell it. When was the last time a beer store was fined for such an infraction, and you can’t tell me that it’s never happened.

  24. Buy micro beer, people! Second, talk to your local politician, to say that foreign ownership, COUPLED with legislation upon domestic brewers of any size, is ludicrous.

Also, educate yourself on Ontario beer practice. Visit a small brewer, talk about legislation and the whole beer environment.

  25. If I remember correctly, this was a Liberal Election Promise back in the 80′s, that beer would be available in our grocery stores. Wine made it, why not beer? Just one more line of Liberal’s b.s..

  26. I was just at the Beer Store today and it looks like this movement might have them a little worried. There was a sign claiming that employees will treat you with dignity and respect and if there is more than 5 people in line they will open another register. I don’t see how they can get more people through with only one till for ordering and one for returns.

And they seem to love changing their hours. When I first turned 19 they were open until 6 on sundays. Now it is only until 5. They also used to be open until 10 everyday except sunday. Now they are only open until 10 on friday and saturday. I have seen beer vendors open late in Manitoba and until 6 on sundays.

It is ridiculous that here in the 21st century I can’t buy a 6 pack of beer anywhere at 8:00 at night on sunday.

And the argument that they control drinking is nonsense. I would say half the time I go there and ask for a six pack I am told that they only carry 12′s or 24′s on most products.

And I don’t know if people here are aware of them bullying Beau’s brewery of Ottawa. They make their beer in a unique ceramic bottle, but
their beer is only sold through the LCBO. However since The Beer Store only accepts returns, people bring them back. And the Beer Store refuses to give the bottles back, instead they just crush them and they go in the garbage. Some environment responsibilty! Even one Ontario brewery is saying that they make more money in Alberta’s free market system versus Ontario’s closed market system.

Time for some competition. And if the Beer Store is as good as they say they are, they won’t have much problem competing.

  27. The Beer Store monopoly is a sad joke that has been going on for way too long!

Any Liberal or Conservative or NDP government will not change the status quo for reasons too many to list here!

So here’s my simple 3 step solution on how to sabotage the Ontario Government sponsored Brewer’s Retail monopoly racket:

    1/ Boycott the BEER STORE!

2/ Support your local micro brewer or buy your beer at the liquor store and you’ll be investing in Ontario instead of wasting your money to three foreign owned companies running this Brewer’s Retail racket!

3/ Donate all your empties to the ‘street people’ and you be supporting the poor all the while pissing off the almighty powers that be at Brewer’s Retail!

    It’s really that simple!

    Cheers!

  28. Simply put, the beer store sucks!

I was infuriated the other day when I went to the only Beer store in my neighborhood in Ottawa to return bottles. When I got there, a bus load of hockey fans were standing in a lineup that went out into the parking lot. The next day, there was still a lineup. I’ve got 2 cases of empties in the back of my car still if anyone is interested…enough is enough!

  29. With all due respect, boycotting does not work. It just means that people end up having to go out of there way to workaround a problem that should not be there to begin with. It may have some short term impact, but is not a long term solution.

With a world of convenience at our fingertips these days, how is it possible that we continue to be subjected to the inconvenience of this establishment? Another post suggested that we should not consume alcohol anyway, or that the choices that the Beer Store offers should suffice… Well, by that logic, why do we have more than one chain of grocery store? There should be only one and the produce should be limited to what the government feels we should have, oh and by the way, it’s going to be nothing but spam for lunches from now on…

I challenge any government body to refute the benefits of allowing an open market for beer and alcohol vendors. Besides the obvious benefit of increasing the variety, how about the green factor. Why should anyone truck their asses out to the Beer Store for there goods if we could kill two birds with one stone at our local supermarket…and save on gas consumption. Is the McGuinty government against more efficient and less polluted ways? Well then…

  30. End the beer store and put the beer in grocery stores beside the wine displays so I don,t have to drive a extra 4 miles to get beer . The grocery chains can be reponsible in the selling of beer as does the selling of wine now in the grocery store.
